Paulino Rivero has been elected President of the Canary Islands for the 7th legislature.

The debate last night was long and heated but finally the Nationalist candidate was elected with the support of the Partido Popular. 34 votes in favour, 19 from the CC and 17 from the PP, and 26 against from the Socialist group.

The Socialist leader, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, said that he would not be granting the new governing team the usual luxury of 100 days grace, because, as he put it, were have suffered 5,000 days of boredom and 15 years of favours.

In his acceptance speech, Paulino Rivero, said that he was ‘very proud’ to be nationalist and outlined the improvements in the islands’ economy seen thanks to his party. He lamented the opposition’s speech which, he said, lacked elegance.
