The Environment Ministry is reported to be in negotiations with the Ministry of Defence to purchase land owned by the military in El Carmolí. The idea is to prevent any possibility of it being developed.
It affects some three kilometres of land coastal land between Cartagena and Los Alcázares, in the protected nature reserve La Marina del Carmolí.
The news, reported by La Opinión de Murcia on Sunday, comes from the Socialist spokesman in Cartagena Town Hall, Juan Luis Martínez, who said the decision follows a visit the Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona, made to the Mar Menor this summer, and asked for proposals for protective land purchases in the area.
The Ministry has set aside 100 million € for purchases of this type along the coast of Spain.
