Four Civil Guard officers are on trial in the Alicante provincial court this Thursday, for the death of a suspect who was arrested in San Juan in 1999.

The private accusation in the case accuses two of the officers of negligent homicide, torture, injury, and failure to provide assistance, and is requesting 14 year sentences. Much lower sentences are requested for their two colleagues.

The state prosecutor says all four should be acquitted.

La Verdad newspaper, in a report this August, names the man who died as Juan Martínez, who was arrested with his nephew on 20th September 1999. He escaped from the Civil Guard cells in San Juan and, according to the private accusation, was beaten after he was re-arrested.

He collapsed from a ruptured spleen when he appeared in court the following day and went into a coma from which he never recovered.

He died on 5th April 2001.
