Ecologists slate Murcia for deficit in protected marine areas

Three environmental organisations have slated the Murcia Region for what they describe as a ‘serious deficit’ in the number of marine protected areas.
Greenpeace, WWF/Adena and Anse said in a press release on Wednesday that the deficit comes despite the Region’s rich diversity in its marine and coastal areas, threatened, they say, by over-development as well as construction near the coast, unsustainable fishing practices, and pollution of the sea.
The release came as the European Symposium on Marine Protected Areas was taking place in Murcia.
Mention is also made of a report the three organisations presented to the Murcia government with their recommendations to set up a network of seven marine protected areas on the Region’s coastline.
They say they have had no response to date, but cite the example of the coast of Marina de Cope, which was deprived of its protected status and is now the planned site for a massive urbanisation and a marina.
