The Canary Islands were hit by another avalanche of immigrant boats this weekend, with 220 passengers reaching the islands in less than 24 hours.

Most of the boats were spotted approaching the Canaries by planes from the air rescue service, SAR, and were escorted into port on Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and El Hierro by the Coastguard.

The largest vessel had 131 people on board, 19 of whom could be under age.

The latest group of 11 passengers reached port in Gran Canaria on board the Esperanza del Mar hospital ship, after a Spanish Air Force plane spotted their boat 170 miles South of Maspalomas.
