Work continues on the beaches of Gran Canaria, to clear up an oil slick which has affected 600 metres of coastline between Bocabarranco and Las Gaviotas, in the south of the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

It came from a breakage in the fuel pipeline to the Unelco electricity plant on Sunday, with reports from witnesses early that morning of hearing a number of small explosions.

The cleanup operation has been assisted by the bulk of the slick being brought onto the shore by the high tide.
