A Level 1 alert has been called on the northern part of Gran Canaria, where, on Thursday evening, a forest fire broke out in Moya, 25 kilometres from Las Palmas.
It affects the area of Loma de Morca, also known as Lomo Los Pajaritos, with reports that four homes had been evacuated, and fuel stored in the area, aggravating the problem. It is a relatively unpopulated area, however.
The wildfires on the islands this summer affected more than 27,000 hectares and forced more than 12,000 people from their homes. They were described by the Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, as an ‘ecological catastrophe.’
