1876: Spain’s first telephone connection is established in Barcelona, from the Castillo de Montjuitch to la Ciudadela.

Famous births on this day in history include in Alcalá de Henares in 1485, Catalina de Aragón y Castilla, the youngest daughter of the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabella. She became known to the English-speaking world as Catherine of Aragon, the first of King Henry VIII’s six wives, and the mother of Queen Mary I.

The poet Rafael Alberti, was born in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz province, in 1902.
