A couple in their seventies are recovering in hospital after a fire at their home on an urbanisation in the Picadueñas area of Jerez de la Frontera in the early hours of Saturday, in which the wife’s sister lost her life. There was no clear indication on what caused the fire, although a likely cause is said to be a heater.
The victim’s sister and a neighbour who scaled the wall into the property’s interior to try and help those trapped inside were saved after another neighbour managed to kick in the front door. It’s understood the fire started in the lounge, which is where firemen found the body of 78 year old M. Vargas when they arrived to tackle the blaze. Her brother-in-law, who suffers Alzheimer’s, was found in bed upstairs and was admitted to hospital to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
La Voz Digital notes that the owners’ two sons – a fireman and a National Police officer - both attended the scene on the Parque Alto Urbanisation.
