Demolition of the Hotel Algarrobico moves a step closer

The land where the controversial Hotel Algarrobico is partially constructed on the edge of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Park, will pass into public ownership later this month.

The Cabinet of the Junta de Andalucia has approved a decree to control the Nature Park and think that the change in the classification of the land will serve to help change the mind of the company who has built the hotel, Azata.

Regional Councillor for the Environment, Fuensanta Coves, said that the Junta wanted to see the hotel demolished and for that to happen there were two options. Firstly that the Andalucian High Court TSJA authorises it, and secondly, that the Ministry for the Environment reaches an agreement with Azata. The former is considered most likely given that the company is demanding 200 million € compensation, while the Government is offering 40 million.

Meanwhile the Supreme Court has partially annulled an earlier sentence from the Andalucian High Court TSJA which gave the go-ahead for the large urbanisation yet planned in the Cabo de Gata. Fuensanta Coves said the ruling from the court in Madrid backed her department’s arguments and it was ‘an important judicial victory’ after ten years of legal processes for the project at the Marinas de Aguamarga.
