The Socialist Mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sánchez, issued a statement on Monday, describing the Partido Popular’s attitude in the case of the irregular housing as prejudicial to the owners concerned. He said their announcement that they will take the problem to the prosecution service could hinder the search for solutions and create more uncertainty for the owners.
The Mayor notes that the PP voted in favour of his motion to urgently explore all means possible to regularise the situation, and alleges that the party is using what is a very serious matter for the families for political ends. Sánchez is also critical of the PP’s comparison of the problem in Mijas with that of Marbella, which he describes as a situation which is completely different: there, he says, large developments were built with irregular licences issued by the Town Hall, while in Mijas, the local government is trying to save homes which were built by the local people despite action to stop the construction by Mijas Town Hall.
Some 300 people in Mijas have received notification of heavy fines or demolition of their property.
