Water company workmen find human remains in central Benidorm

Forensic scientists are investigating human remains unearthed by workmen from the Aquagest water company as they were working on repairs to the drainage system in central Benidorm on Monday. The Información newspaper said the bones were found below ground at the crossroads of Calles Pintor Lozano and Los Ángeles, and could belong to several people.

Amongst them was a skull, which by its size, could either be that of a woman or a child. The paper said the bones could have been there for more than 50 years.

There are a number of theories being put forward as to how the bones came to be there: from a nearby former convent which was equipped with a hospice and a sanatorium, that there may have been a cemetery in the area for those who died outside the walls of Benidorm castle, or that the workmen may have discovered a mass grave from the Civil War.
