Judge Jorge Bartolomé Moriano has concluded his instruction of the Operation Karlos social security fraud investigation in Cádiz, and has formally charged 34 people as suspects.
Amongst them are María José Campanario, wife of the bullfighter, Jesulín de Ubrique, and María de la Paz Cañero, who at the time the charges relate to, was secretary to the then Mayor of Jerez, Pedro Pacheco. Both women are said to have made fraudulent claims for disability pensions for their mothers, using documentation provided by the two men who led the scam, Carlos Carretero, ex local police chief in Ubrique, and Francisco Casto Pérez, who was in charge of the Andaluz Health Service’s evaluation unit for labour disabilities.
It’s understood the amount paid by those who used the illegal service could have been as much as 24,000 €.
The charges against the suspects include falsifying documents, fraud and bribery.
