It was also the day for the regional elections in Andalucía yesterday, with the Partido Popular gaining ground but not enough to stop the overall majority from the Socialists, again at the cost of the smaller parties, especially the Andalucian coalition which looks like losing its parliamentary representation.

Turnout was slightly less than nationally at 73,78%.

With 95% of the votes counted, the PSOE had 48% of the vote and 56 seats, the PP 38% of the vote and 47 seats and IU left wingers 7% of the vote and 6 seats.

Manuel Chaves will once again have the luxury of an overall majority to lead the Socialists in the Junta de Andalucía, but only just. He needed 55 seats for the majority and obtained 56.

The PSOE lost five seats and the PP gained ten. IU managed to hold on to their six.
