1516: Carlos, Duke of Burgundy and grandson of the recently deceased Catholic King, Fernando II of Aragón, proclaims himself King of Castilla and Aragón. He became Carlos I of Spain, and Carlos V, Holy Roman Emperor.
1936: the Falange Española is declared illegal and its leaders are arrested, amongst them the founder of the right-wing movement, José Antonio Primo de Rivera.
1995: Statutes of Autonomy for Ceuta and Melilla come into effect with their publication in the Official State Bulletin.
2004: the opposition Socialist Party defeats the Partido Popular in the general election.
The acclaimed broadcaster and naturalist, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, was born in Poza de la Sal, Burgos, on this day in 1928. He died in a plane crash exactly 52 years later along with two Spanish film crew while filming in Alaska in 1980.
