An 84 year old British tourist has died in the specialist burns unit of Alicante General Hospital as a consequence of the third degree burns he suffered in a hotel bathroom in Benidorm.
The man, who has been named as Donald W. by Spanish sources, was staying in the hotel on holiday with his wife and had been in Benidorm for more than a month when the accident happened on March 8. It is reported that he suffered the burns after losing consciousness in the bathroom just as the bath was being filled.
Información newspaper reports that the couple had been drinking some beer beforehand and the man had returned to the room ahead of his wife as he felt unwell. She found him in the bathroom some hours later.
He finally died from his injuries last weekend after spending some two weeks in hospital.
The Benidorm hoteliers association has commented that health protocols establish that the hot water must be at a temperature of at least 55 degrees as a measure against the Legionnaires virus.
