The trial has begun in the Almería provincial court this week of a 49 year old woman, named by Ideal newspaper as Encarna T.M., who murdered her husband with a shotgun blast at a cortijo on the outskirts of Vélez Rubio two years ago, then phoned emergency services to confess and tell them where she had buried him. She tried to commit suicide while officers were looking for the body. The trial is by jury, and she faces a possible 11 years in prison.
The newspaper said the couple had separated in June 2005, and under the agreement the cortijo they owned in Vélez Rubio belonged to the wife. She told the court on the first day of the trial on Monday that the shooting happened after an argument when she found him on the property in December that year and he refused to leave. She claims he threatened to set fire to the house with her inside, and that she was in fear of her life when she shot her husband, Antonio López.
