Talks for demolition of Algarrobico Hotel said to be going well

The Junta de Andalucía’s acting environment chief, Fuensanta Coves, has confirmed that negotiations for demolition of the controversial Algarrobico Hotel in Carboneras are continuing with its owners, Azata del Sol, and mentioned ‘new proposals on the table’. She said the conversations are going well and said she was hopeful of having good news to report in the near future, but declined to give any details of the content of any possible agreement.

Coves was speaking to the EFE news agency following reports on Wednesday of a ruling from the Andalucía High Court of Justice which has overturned appeals from Azata and Carboneras Town Hall against the 2006 court decision which called a halt to work on the hotel. The court halted construction following a complaint placed by the association ‘Salvemos Mojácar.’

Coves believes that the ruling reinforces ‘the idea that the future for the hotel will be demolition’ something which her department and the Environment Ministry have both been working towards. No appeals may be made against the High Court decision, EFE said.
