The Gibraltar Government has issued a statement saying that it will only release more information on the operation to recover the New Flame cargo vessel, half sunken off Europa Point since colliding with a tanker last August 12, ‘when public interest demands’.

The note also said that the Spanish authorities would be kept fully informed in private on the matter.

The Peter Caruana administration considers that the media has distorted information provided previously in good faith by the Gibraltar Government. El País considers the Gibraltar Government has made the move following the complaints made by the ecologist group Verdemar which had accused the Gibraltar administration and the Spanish Government of allowing the scrap metal coming from the dismantling of the vessel to be removed to an undetermined place.

Spanish acting Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona, said on Wednesday that she knew nothing of the Verdemar complaint.
