The body of the missing 15 year old from Canillas de Aceituno who went missing two weeks ago, Manuel Marín Hidalgo has been found. The body was already in such a state of decomposition that DNA evidence was needed to confirm the identification.
It was found by a search party in an area which is hard to reach, known as Peñón Grande, which is a mere kilometre and a half from the village of Canillas. It took some four hours to recover the body found at 1130 on Saturday morning.
It’s thought that Manuel Marín probably died on the same day he disappeared, Monday two weeks ago, after falling down a 60 metre drop in the local Sierra Tejeda.
The Guardia Civil say they are keeping all options open in the case but they do not think that any third party was involved in the tragedy, which is being considered as being a suicide.
He had left home on March 31 after telling a friend he would not be going to football practice, taking house keys but leaving behind money, his ID and a mobile phone.
More than 3,500 people turned out for the funeral for the youngster which was held today in Canillas de Aceituno. The service in the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario was taken by the Bishop of Málaga, Antonio Dorado Soto, and three priests, with 500 people crammed into the church and the rest filling the streets outside.
