Recent rains have little effect on Spanish reservoirs

Barcelona is to receive water directly from the Ebro River with an agreement between the Catalan and National government reported to be almost signed by 20 minutos. Under the new plan the water will be taken directly from the mouth of the river in Tarragona in a 60km long pipeline to run next to the AP-7 motorway. It comes after the Catalan Government was left alone defending the idea of taking water for Barcelona from the Segre river.

The idea has been criticised by the Murcia Regional Government as being more a stable water transfer plan than an emergency measure. Juan Antonio de Heras, spokesman for the Murcia Government called for a similar measure to be extended to the ‘whole Levante coast’.

Meanwhile some reservoirs in Andalucía have captured more than 200 hectometres of water from the recent rains, with Sevilla and Córdoba now having enough water for three years with last week’s rain equivalent to that seen in the previous six months.

The improvement is local however with the Mediterranean basin which serves Málaga and to the east practically unchanged.
