Construction work has restarted on the motorway bridge above the Rio Verde valley in Almuñecar, suspended nearly two and a half years ago when six workers died when part of the structure under construction collapsed on November 7 2005.

EFE news agency reports that over the next few days a new structure will be placed to support against the central pillar of the viaduct, after which work to make the top crossing to link the bridge will restart.

The section is now the most complicated piece of the A7 coastal motorway which still needs to be completed. Recent strike action by crane operators has added a further month to the work on the section between Taramay and La Herradura.

Meanwhile the judicial investigation into the accident continues in the First Instance and Instruction courts in Almuñecar.
