Patti Smith was the star of the show in Madrid yesterday for their celebration of the Noche de los Libros. The United States singer gave an intimate concert of her songs and poetry in the Real Casa de Correos, paying tribute to the Spanish literary giants.
‘I am thinking of Lorca’, she said, ‘and my son is thinking about ‘chiki-chiki’ – a reference to Spain’s spoof entry to this year’s European Song Contest.
Mixing music and literature, Patti paid special attention to Cervantes with ‘The Writers Song’ – ‘Banzai Banzai, it’s better to write than die’, and recommended ‘Howl’ by Allen Ginsberg to the 750 audience lucky enough to get a ticket.
