The Catalan Health Service, Servei Catalán de la Salut, has been ordered to pay 64,000 € compensation to the family of a 34 year old man who died a few days after an incorrect diagnosis.
Jordi Barbena was told in November 2003, in the emergency department of his local hospital, that he was suffering from pneumonia when in fact the post mortem revealed that he had acute leukaemia.
The Judicial ruling says that the serious error of a mistaken diagnosis was followed by the patient being sent home too early and a lack of diligence in the case.
