Rafa Nadal beat the world number one, Roger Federer, to win his first title of the season and his fourth consecutive title at Monaco on clay. The score 7-5, 7-5, with Nadal making a spectacular come back from 0-4 in the second set. The match lasted 1 hour and 44 minutes.
It will be a relief for Nadal who has lost his last two finals against Russian players, against Mikhail Youzhny in Madras and against Nikolay Davidenko in Miami, but clay is his favourite surface and the win in Monte Carlo becomes his 24th of his career.
Federer had not lost a match on clay since the final at Roland Garros last year against Nadal, and it was he who broke the Spaniard’s winning run of 81 consecutive matches on the surface.
