Pat Symonds, head of engineering in the Renault Formula One team, has said that a further 19 improvements have been made to the new R28 car and that his is estimated to cut new lap times for Fernando Alonso by some three tenths of a second.
Describing it as an important step forward, Symonds nevertheless admitted that there was still a difference with Ferrari who he considered to be out in front. He said the fight to improve the Renault would continue, and that the next race in Turkey would confirm whether the changes made have really useful or not.
Monaco was different, as the car’s aerodynamics did not play such an important role on the urban circuit, where it was the breaks and suspension which took the hammering.
