Residents of Marbella are set to see a 36% increase in their IBI local rates over the three years from 2010. The measure is part of a new viability plan which has been drawn up for the town by the governing Partido Popular, with the increases following a 5% rates increase this year.

The new plan is part of a package which has been sent to the Social Security authorities in an attempt to reach a deal on the payment of back debt established in the time of the GIL party. The opposition Socialists say they will call for demonstrations against the size of the planned rate increases.

It comes following the news from the local small business association in Marbella and San Pedro, Apymem, that 260 business have had to close in the face of falling trade. They warn of what they say will be ‘serious consequences’ for the sector when the planned new Oasis commercial centre opens.
