Despite all the recent publicity about the new Penal Code, judges in Murcia have handed down fines and not prison sentences to the 18 people found to have been driving in the region without a licence over the bank holiday break.

The law now allows for a three to six month prison sentence for driving without a licence, but the regions’s judges have all handed out fines in the express courts in agreement with the offenders. The harshest fine was imposed in Yecla, at 1,800 € and 40 days community service.

There was one driver from Murcia who has been sent to prison for three months, but this was for drunk driving and not for driving without a licence. Seven of the 18 cases are motorbikers.

Nationally 128 people were arrested for driving without a licence over the May Day weekend.
