An Irish couple, now named as John and Mary O'Connell from Carhan, Cahirciveen in Co Kerry, has been killed after being hit by a drunk driver when crossing the N-332 road at Orihuela Costa.
It happened at 0035am on Tuesday morning at the 47.2 km point, opposite the La Zenia urbanisation, with the collision resulting in the death of the 46 year old man and 45 year old woman, while the driver of the car escaped unhurt. No other vehicle was involved.
The accident happened at what is considered locally to be a black spot with bars open into the early hours on both sides of the road.
The body of one of the victims was carried 20 metres by the impact, and witnesses claimed the driver was travelling faster than the 60km speed limit in the area. It is understood the victims had just arrived on holiday and went for a walk when they were hit by the Peugeot 206 car.
