Mother kills her five month old baby daughter in a fit of post-natal depression

The residents of the small village of Tijarafe on the Canary Island of La Palma have been shocked by the news that a 32 year old local woman has suffocated her five month old baby daughter to death in a fit of post-natal depression.
It happened in the early hours of Wednesday with the woman also launching an attack against her husband.

An autopsy is to be carried out to establish the cause of death of the child. Neighbours told El Mundo that the couple have been married for nearly four years, and the wife had undergone fertility treatment to get pregnant. The 35 year old husband is the owner of a small local construction company and both were well known in the village.

Neighbours said they never heard them argue. For now the woman has not been arrested and the matter remains in the hands of the local courts. She is being questioned by the Guardia Civil, but no charges have been placed as yet.
