Pressures between the Spanish tennis players and the sport’s federation in Spain have reached boiling point with the players now publically criticising the federation over its wish to hold the Davis Cup semi-finals in Madrid, on September 19-21, and not at sea level as the players all want.
All the main players, Nadal, Ferrer, Moyá, Robredo, Almagro, Ferrero, Verdasco and Feliciano have said in a letter that they will not take part in any promotional acts for the federation while Pedro Muñoz remains its President. The letter is in support of the Davis Cup captain, Emilio Sánchez Vicario, and says the players have found themselves with no option than to publically declare their concern at the management of Sr. Muñoz, who they claim has continuously tricked them by his decision since he took up the post.
Four towns remain as possibilities to host the Davis Cup semi-final games in Spain – Madrid, Benidorm, Gijón and Tenerife, and a final decision will be taken on Friday.
Pedro Muñoz has issued a statement in response to the players’ letter, saying merely he will make no statement about it.
