The Partido Popular leader in the Basque Country, María San Gil, has said that she will resign from her post if she cannot recover her confidence in the party leader Mariano Rajoy. She told the press that she considered that there was a lack of confidence in the national party management.
Speaking for the first time since stepping back from the party’s policy making committee in the region, she said that the problem was not with the text of the party’s policy, but with what lay beyond it.
María San Gil is a well respected hardliner in the Partido Popular, but she dismissed any speculation that she may be planning a challenge for the leadership of the party.
There are press reports today however that she spoke to the previous PP Prime Minister, José María Aznar, before making her move against Mariano Rajoy.
There was a brief meeting between her and Mariano Rajoy after the leader of the opposition travelled to the area after the latest ETA outrage. Rajoy told the press that they would be talking more between them on the phone.
