National Court judge, Ismael Moreno, has ordered the ex Mayor of Andoain in Guipúzcoa, José Antonio Barandiaran to prison without bail on charges of collaborating with the Basque terrorist group, ETA. He was arrested in Bordeaux on May 21 and now the prosecutors’ office has called for him to be placed in prison.

The judge considered it proven that the ex Mayor held a meeting on May 18th with the alleged number one of ETA, the recently arrested Francisco Javier López Peña, known as ‘Thierry’ and the two other ETA activists arrested last week.

The court heard how Barandiaran took special steps to try and ensure that he was not being followed, steps which the judge considered to be ‘rational indications of criminality’.

It’s thought the Euskal Herritarrok politician had asked ‘Thierry’ to draw up a theoretical report on the political system in any future Basque state.
