Another wet week and then a dry and hot summer in Spain

The weather forecasters in Spain say that the rains which have been affecting much of the country of late, and Cataluña in particular, are set to last for another week, but that the actual summer will be a dry one.

The rain next week will affect the Balearic Islands, Cataluña and the Levante coast in particular, and has already caused the Ebro river to burst its banks.

Despite the rain in May the month is no where near as wet as May 1971 when 124 litres fell per square metre. This May the figure is 85 litres.

Rainfall levels over the summer will be normal, that is to say practically inexistent, while temperatures are forecast to be somewhat higher than average and slighter warmer than last year.

Meanwhile thanks to the water which has taken reserviour levels in Cataluña to over 40%, the President of the regional government, La Generalitat, José Montilla, has said that he would be happy to cancel the order for the new water transfer pipe planned from Tarragona to Barcelona if the reserves are sufficient to guarantee the supply.
