Spanish fishermen are to hand out as much as 20 tons of fish for free in Madrid today in protest at the high diesel prices which they say had made their job unprofitable.

A series of protest actions organised by the fishermen’s employers’ organisation CEPESCA start today outside the offices of the Ministry for the Environment and Rural and Maritime Affairs. They say the fish they hand out will have been caught yesterday to show the quality of the Spanish fleet and to draw attention to the crisis in the industry.

There will be an international component to the demonstration in Madrid today with representatives from fishermen in France, Italy and Portugal, and comes ahead of plans for an indefinite strike in Spain which will see empty fish markets from June 16 onwards.
