Basque terrorists ETA have responded to the referendum idea being put forward by the President of the Basque Government, the lehendakari, Juan José Ibarretxe, as a fraud dressed up as a regional reform.

ETA made the comment in a statement published by the Basque language newspaper ‘Gara’ and dismisses the plan for a referendum on October 25. ETA says they will continue with their ‘contribution’ for the construction of a Basque state, although the statement is dated on Monday, two days before Ibarretxe revealed the two questions he wants to put in the referendum which is considered by the Government in Madrid to be illegal and unconstitutional.

The ETA statement continues ‘If an adequate answer to the root of the problem is not found, then the conflict will persist, and we will be obliged to continue fighting as we have until now’.

Meanwhile today’s La Vanguardia newspaper claims today that there is a serious crisis in the ETA hierarchy, especially since the arrest of four top members of the gang in Bordeaux earlier in May.
