Fernando Alonso has said after the Canada grand prix that his collision during the race was his fault, and that the podium chance was something unrealistic because the Renault team had made a horrible mistake in strategy regarding entering boxes when the safety car was on the track.
He said it was not the failure of the R28’s gear box which caused him to retire from the race when in third position, but his collision with a wall which was entirely down to his driver error.
The race was won by Kubica, his first win of the season, but it puts him top of the drivers’ championship. Briton’s Lewis Hamilton had to retire after running into the back of Kimi Raikkonen in the pit lane; a collision which has cost Hamilton a ten place penalty on the starting grid in the next race in France for missing a red light.
