The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has said that it is to fine the Ascó nuclear plant near Tarragona following the detection of ‘failings in safety procedures’.
At a press conference given by the President of the C.S.N., Carmen Martínez Ten, and the Mayor of Ascó, Rafael Vidal, after appearing in Congress, Martínez said that some 1000 radioactive particles had been detected to have escaped, 99% of them inside the plant. The radiation was the equivalent to 7 milicuries.
The C.S.N. was now to carry out its own investigation of the lessons which could be learned from the escape last November.
The President said that there was no radioactive impact on the workers or visitors to the centre, or to the local environment. The power station is currently offline.
