Sierra Nevada cable car - the future will be decided in court

The company which wants to build a new cable car to the top of the Sierra Nevada, Teleférico Sierra Nevada, is not giving up on its idea, despite the Junta de Andalucía saying the project to build what would be the longest cable car in the world has to be scrapped because of its effects on the ecological richness of the zone.

President of the company and instigator of the idea, Juan Antonio López, thinks otherwise and is determined to link the Sierra Nevada ski station with Granada by the 19 kilometre long route. His legal advisors say they have enough arguments to start judicial action, claiming the rejection from the Junta is ‘unjust’.

It means that several years in the courts are now ahead, but López is thought to have already invested a million € in the idea which he thinks once built would ‘transform’ the city and also contribute to reducing traffic using the road to the ski centre. The junta claims the traffic reduction would be only 6%, now it seems the courts will have the final word.
