The special measures will be operational in ten of Spain’s regions, Andalucía, Asturias, Canarias, Cantabria, Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, Islas Baleares, Madrid and Murcia, as well as in Ceuta and Melilla, and as many as 6,300 National Police and Civil Guards will take part in the exercise named ‘Operación Verano 2008’.

It will see increased controls on traffic and the movement of people in tourist areas, with a greater police presence in stations, ports, airports, hotels, beaches and camping sites, and there will also be more police at shows and events where a large number of public may congregate.

The measures are in addition to the anti-terrorist alert which remains on level 2 as part of the standard anti-terrorist prevention and action plan.
