The Spanish football team faces what is being described as its most important match in the past two decades tonight, when it meets Hiddink’s Russia in Vienna.
Germany awaits the winner of tonight’s game after their 3-2 win against Turkey last night.

The Spanish wanted to repeat the same hotel in the Austrian capital, but the Russians had beaten them to it and are in the hotel used by Spain in the quarter finals against Italy.

The statisticians and historians have been at work again, and say that Spain has never lost a major competition in the Semi-final stage. The last two occasions were in 1964 against Hungary which Spain went on to win beating the USSR, and in 1984 against Denmark.

For the Russians today’s game is their first semifinal since the disappearance of the Soviet Union, but they are still the team, together with the Germans who have played most semi-finals in the history of the European Championship.

The semi-final kicks off at 2045 CET tonight.
