324 areas with high concentrations of mosquito have been identified in Alicante, and with the arrival of the high temperatures the authorities have started a fumigation program.
The areas of the beach at Cabo Huertas, Virgen del Remedio, Juan XXIII and the historic city centre are most affected this year according to the company contracted to control the problem, Lokímica.
They spray the areas each week using helicopters and other methods and also keep an eye on other pests.
Alicante is said to have 0.7 rats per person, which is well below the World Health Service recommendation of less than two. Lokímica say the rat population is under control, although were there are demolished buildings and cracks in the pavement they can come to the surface and shock the citizens.
