Siamese Twins separated in Sevilla

The Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Sevilla has carried out an operation to separate Siamese twins, born in Morocco, who were joined at the abdomen.

A multi-disciplined team made up of 36 professionals took eight hours and used two operating theatres to separate the girls who are three weeks old and share some internal organs and part of the breastbone and diaphragm.

The condition of the two children is now said to be stable and they are making progress. The medical team say both should be able to carry out completely normal lives.

Siamese twins occur from the incomplete separation of two gamates from a single ovule, and happens in about 1 in 200,000 births, generally in females.
