Francisco Franco remains favoured son of Alicante

A planning meeting of the provincial Diputación Government in Alicante yesterday, saw the votes of the Partido Popular reject a Socialist motion to remove the name of Francisco Franco as most-favoured son of the city. The Socialists say that such an honour for a dictator was now out of place, while the P.P. said that no one was losing any sleep over the matter.

Socialist Roque Moreno, said that the new historical memory law should be applied, which allowed for the honour to be removed in the same way that plaques and statues have been across the country.

But Mercedes Alonso, the assistant PP spokesperson in the Alicante Diputación said that the naming of Franco as most favoured son of the province upset nobody, and least those who had grown up in the time of Spanish democracy. She said other things, such as water and electricity price rises were more important to society.

She said that under the Diputacion’s own rules such an award is for ever, and therefore no honour can be removed from Franco.
