The Mayor of Alicante has passed onto central government the decision on whether or not a licence should be granted to build a biodiesel plant at the city’s port.

The news comes after it was revealed that the company in question does not have a licence to distribute the fuel. The Mayor, Luis Díaz Alperi, said City Hall can only grant building and operating licences to companies which have all other necessary permissions in place.

Responsibility for the distribution licence lies with the Development Ministry.

The project has been met with fierce opposition from the start, both from local residents and opposition parties at City Hall, who are concerned about its environmental and visual impact.
