A professor from the School of Engineers in Seville has described the recent findings of the Development Ministry team of experts on the cause of the Almuñécar viaduct collapse as ‘superficial.’
Ministry technicians concluded that the steel platform which supported the viaduct under construction gave way owing to a fault in a welded seam. Six men lost their lives when the structure collapsed in November 2005.
Professor Federico Paris, who is a specialist in resistance and elasticity, said the explanations given by the Ministry experts are very generalised, and that the team should have carried out in-depth investigations into exactly why the welded seam gave way.
